My Review:

The Obsidian Blade is one of those books that after you close the cover, you have to sit in silence for a moment. You have to let it all sink in. What the heck did I just read? This was a wild and wacky ride. In the beginning, I found myself a little bored. It took a bit for the meat of the story to really take hold. When it finally did, I was happily drawn in. Then there were times that I was a little put off and times where I was down right confused and lost! I know. You are asking yourself...then why the 4 star rating? Even though, I felt slightly uncomfortable and confused at times? I really did enjoy this book.

I am very passionate about character driven books. And while our main character, Tucker, may not have been super strong at times, overall I found him to be an enjoyable voice to this story. Aside from Tucker, however, there are a few of the secondary characters that I just loved and can't wait to see more of in future instalments. First off was Tucker's Uncle Kosh. He added a lot of humor and depth to this story. He comes off as this big tough guy, but you can see deep down he is a softy at heart, and especially when it comes to his nephew. This is a developing relationship that I hope continues in future books. The other character that I loved, was Lahlia. Lahlia grows tremendously throughout this book and I love where she is at the end. She has grown into this super strong,determined young woman. I think she is going to be an awesome force of kick-buttness(is that a word)in this series and can not wait to see where book two takes her and Tucker.

I know a lot of people tend to get put off by the whole time-travel thing. And I will be honest and say that at times I was a bit confused as to how and where the characters were at a few points in the story. However, I still love the whole time travel theme. It fascinates me. Truly. It is total madness. But so very cool.

The only real negative thing I can really say about this book was the whole religious aspect. And that really is just a person thing. I just found it a bit too 'preachy' at times. Not really in a bible thumping aspect, but...well, I can't really explain. I just felt uncomfortable at times. Perhaps it was just the mix of the time travel madness and the religion together...I don't know.

In the end, I would definitely recommend, The Obsidian Blade. Author Pete Hautman did a fine job of keeping my interest enough to keep those pages turning and making me anxious for book two.

And on a side note? Don't you just love that cover? Love it!

One of the things I love so much about blogging is being given the opportunity to use my voice. To share my love of books and to help promote the ones I love so very much. I may not be a big time blogger, but I still love being able to do my little part. So today I am here to do just that!

I received an email from Javi Araguz and Isabel Hierro, authors of a new YA book called The Star. The book is currently written in Spanish and has had great reviews. They are hoping to get enough buzz to have an English version released. I am here to tell you that I have read the English translation of Chapter One and...WOW! I loved it! And thus, I am here to get this book out to all my fellow bloggers and readers. It is currently not available in English. My Review:

I first have to say that this was an outstanding series. I loved every minute of this journey. Again, another great addition to the world of YA Dystopian and another great series for those male reluctant readers in your life.

The first book, The Maze Runner, took me by surprise. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. The second book, The Scorch Trials, blew me away. I am not sure what I was expecting with The Death Cure. While I enjoyed it, it did not blow me away like The Scorch Trials did. The first two books were filled with so much action, so much character depth on individual levels and on all relationship levels. I found The Death Cure, to be lacking somewhat for me. Okay, yes there was still a lot of action, but it just felt different and not with the same intensity.

With all that aside? I still enjoyed it. Thomas is a great main character. He is easy to like. He is real, flawed and I think we see him grow a lot throughout this series. Thomas is also surrounded by great characters. Each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Some lovable. Newt, Newt, Newt...forever in my heart! Some so very frustrating. Teresa, Teresa, Teresa...one of my unanswered questions.

James Dashner has an incredible talent. He is a master of creating a story that draws you in. The kind of story that keeps you turning those pages. Wanting more. And when you get it? Wanting even more. And that is exactly what he did. While the ending may have left me with more questions than answers? I am happy with the way in which this journey has come to an end. Although...James Dashner, if you are listening? I would not be against another series. I am not sure I am quite ready to let these characters go...just saying...

My Review:

I will admit that going into this one, I was expecting to not really enjoy myself. The whole 'finger in the belly button' thing really turned me off. You know what? If you put aside the silliness of that aspect? This story is really quite entertaining. I found myself really enjoying it.

The characters were all fairly believable and likable. The relationship between Zan and his best friends, James and Julie, was real and a nice change from most YA stories. The love story between Zan and Austin was sweet. It was not a really love at first sight in the true meaning of the sense. Yes, Zan was head over heals and yes they had a rather quick physical connection, but it did not seem forced as a lot of relationships in YA right now.

I found the paranormal aspects of the story to be interesting. I may have been a bit confused at times, but perhaps due to the story being as short as it was(only about 140 pages) there just was not sufficient time to fully develop the storyline enough.

All in all, Poke was an enjoyable read aside from the actual 'Poke' aspect. It was enjoyable enough, that I am interested to see where author Dalya Moon will take the story and these characters.

My Review:

First off, thank you to author S R Johannes for the opportunity to read this wonderful book. This was such a joy to read. What an outstanding addition to the world of middle grade reads.

Gabby is such a great character. She is strong, spunky, loving, funny and passionate about what she believes in. The great thing though is she is still very much flawed, like the majority of us. But, we get to see her grow and learn from her ever growing list of mistakes.

Not only did I adore Gabby, but we are treated to an array of equally lovable secondary characters. Like, Lawrence, Gabby's SKYagent. The relationship between these two is not only endearing, but downright funny at times. We have the 14 year old rebelling angel and her grouchy...yet, softy at heart...mentor. They really are a great pair. Then we have Gabby's best BITfriend, Jessica. Jessica is sweet, positive and very funny. It was so much fun to see the friendship develop throughout this story. They are the perfect partners in crime!

Of course with all this BRIGHTness, comes the dark. Author, S R Johannes, did an outstanding job of creating a unique version of Heaven(Cirrus) and Hell(Ignitus). It's something new and different. And something that I think will appeal to the middle grade readers out there. So much so, I have passed this one onto my 10 year old. She is a few chapters in already and loving it!

I think what I loved so much about this book is not only the new prospective of what Heaven could be like, but also all the great lesson's within the pages of this fun story. I definitely took away a feeling of always treating people with respect and dignity. We truly can never know what someone else's life is really like or what they may be feeling until we take the time to get to really know them. We need to tell the people in our lives how we feel about them. It can all be taken away so quickly. Living with regrets is never a good thing. Also? Sometimes things happen for a reason. Whether good or bad, there is always something to be learned from the experience.

If I had but one negative thing to say? It would be that at times the SKYisms were a bit over done. However, I think that may have just been me and my adult prospective. I have a pretty big suspicion that they will be very well received from the middle grade crowd.

In the end, I recommend On The Bright Side to all middle grade and above readers. I think Gabby is definitely a character young girls will fall for. Coming from an adult prospective? I loved it. It is a fun, light read. I really do look forward to seeing where Gabby's next phase of training takes her and very much look forward to the second book!

My Review:

First off, I must admit that this is certainly not my genre of choice. However, as I have said before, I think it is good to go outside your comfort zone once in awhile.

Practice Cake sounded like a cute, quick read and the author is from Canada! Thus, I agreed to take it on for review. Sadly, it did not deliver for me. While the storyline would have made for a quick, fun read, the writing lacked in most areas. I am assuming this book is being pushed out as a YA Contemporary as the main character, Maddie, is a young 18 year old girl fresh out of High School. However, through most of the book I found her to be much younger. This one is hard to classify for me. I think it would be more enjoyable to a younger teen, but there is some subject matter that is more suited to an older teen.

I also had some difficulty with the slang used throughout the book. Maybe coming from an Adult prospective has tainted my opinion, but I just found it annoying. Overall, I just had a very hard time connecting to these characters. I also had a hard time with the pacing and flow in general. I found myself turning back the pages to see if I had missed something. I kept thinking that perhaps Maddie had ADD or something of that nature. I just found the dialogue and scenes bouncing around too much and did not flow with any normalcy.

I must admit, however, that author, Dalya Moon, redeemed herself in the final chapter. It was wonderfully written. The pacing, the internal dialogue and just the general depth of characterisation was spot on. This final chapter was so well written that I have no doubt that Dalya Moon's next book will only get better.

In the end? While this may have not been my cup of tea, I am sure someone out there would enjoy this nice light read. However, if YA Contemporary is not your thing? You may want to pass on this one.

My Review:

First off. Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for the opportunity to read and review White Horse. After reading the synopsis, I knew this was something I could devour. I have become a huge lover of all things Dystopian. However, this was not quite at all what I was expecting. For some reason I was under the impression that this was a YA book. Not. Anyone use to reading reviews of mine, this is not a YA book. If you are easily offended by language, violence and gore, be forewarned. This is probably not a book for you.

I will admit that in the beginning, I was not sure how I felt about the narration. While I did enjoy Zoe's voice throughout this book, I found myself a bit overwhelmed. Zoe's story bounces back and forth from past to present and the author's writing was at times a bit over done. Perhaps a bit too flowery for my taste. However, the story was so intoxicating that I was able to overlook these minor distractions.

Zoe is such a strong character with just the right amount of snarkiness to suit me. When we meet her she has already been through so much heart break in her life. Then her life and the world around her begins to crumble in an even more devastating and destructive way. Not only is White Horse a Dystopian, but it is filled with mystery, suspense, horror and at it's core, a love story.

Yes, there are a number of very disturbing, shockingly horrific scenes. Author Alex Adams has created one of the most terrifying, psychotic characters I have read to date. The Swiss, is...well, if you like your evil to be truly evil, you will not be disappointed in this character!

The ending of book one in this new trilogy left me wanting more, but without an annoying cliffhanger. In the end, I would definitely recommend this one. Just be prepared to be shocked and horrified, yet left with a feeling of joy and hope. Well done, Alex Adams!

My Review:

I am sad to say that Beautiful Chaos was a big disappointment for me. I had such high hopes as Beautiful Darkness was such a great book! It was fun, exciting, funny, thrilling and just a big adventure. It was filled with great, great characters that I just adored. Beautiful Chaos? Was none of those things. This book was WAY too long and filled with nothing. Most of the characters that I adored from the beginning of this series, were lifeless and just dull. I don't really know what happened. The authors just threw a bunch of stuff in a hat and made a book out of it.

What?!!! It was a book about nothing. There was this huge build up for something amazing, something critical, something other worldly. Then it just ended. I will admit the last 50 pages or so, did have my attention. But then the end? What? It was just like Lena says throughout this series, 'not with a bang, but a whimper.' And that is exactly how this series ended for me.I guess, I can say that John would have been the only character that showed some depth. But, he was only in the book for a short period of time. I truly missed Boo Radley and Lucille Ball. They were mentioned a few times, but they were sadly, sadly missed. As was Ridley. I have always thought that Rid is one of THE best female characters I have read. Again, I am not sure what the authors had in mind? I just did not get it.

In the end, if you have been a fan of this series, I guess I would say read it to see how it all ends. If you have not read this series yet? Read the first two and then make up your own ending...it would probably be more enjoyable than the real thing.

My Review:

First off...Cassandra Clare. Are you trying to kill me? Seriously? OMG!

Looking back at my review for Clockwork Angel, I whole heartily believe that I overrated it. Clockwork Prince totally blew Clockwork Angel out of the water! As I have said before, Cassandra Clare speaks to my soul. I cannot fully explain it, but she truly is a cure for what ails me. Cassandra Clare has a knack for creating incredible characters. Whether they are characters that we love or love to hate. Every single one of these characters are embedded into my soul. I love them all!

Tessa has grown so much since the first book. I felt much more connected to her and truly caring for her on every level. She is a very intelligent young woman, funny,strong and learning about herself and the world around her. What more could you ask for. Jem is still very much, Jem. We all love him. He is that sensitive, caring, just all around great guy. While I love Jem, just like the next person, I don't LOVE Jem. My...okay, Tessa's... heart belongs to Will. Will...my Will. Okay, yes, I have a bit of a book crush on Will. Will...as with Jace from the Mortal Instrument Series...is strong, snarky, hilarious, loyal and just downright hot! Okay, okay. I know he is only 17, but somehow this book felt so much more sophisticated than Clockwork Angel. At times I really forgot that these were teenagers. I felt so connected to these three and their lives...again Cassandra Clare is a master!

Once again this book also confirmed my ever growing love of Magnus Bane. He is such a great character. There are many dimensions to Magnus and I know there are more to come. He is one of those characters that I would love to meet in real life...okay, I know he only lives between the pages of a book, but seriously, would he not be a blast to hang out with?! The things that spew from that mans mouth!

A great moment for me, was seeing the relationship building between Charlotte and Henry. These two are just so cute. For those that have read Clockwork Angel, I know you are thinking...'what are you talking about?'...but, Cassandra Clare had me in tears. You have to read it to understand.

I could go on and on about each of these characters. I am truly a lover of Character driven books. I know that many reviewers have complained that the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices are one in the same. 'There is absolutely no difference in the plots of these two series'. 'The characters are the same.' Well, okay. You may have a point... to a degree. This series takes place before The Mortal Instruments. This is the story of how it all began, so yes, of course it will be similar. As far as the characters? Okay, sure. I can see similarities. So what? I still adore them all. If I had, but one complaint. It would be the whole love triangle thing. It can be a bit exhausting and quite frustrating at times. But would I change it? No. It is what it is and I love every moment of this book.

In the end, would I recommend this book/series? Yes, oh yes, oh yes. If you love character driven stories? If you enjoy your share of snarkiness and sharp witted characters? If you love adventure and a bit of magic thrown in for good measure? If you are a fan of Victorian era, Steampunk romance? You will adore this series. If you have read Clockwork Angel and feel the series is not really worth continuing? Please... give it another shot.

And Cassandra Clare? You will be the death of me. You know that, right?

My mini review:

Once again author, Darby Karchut has created a great middle grade read! Griffin is adorable as ever and Basil is still such a great father figure and brilliant man. Griffin’s Fire was somewhat tamer than book one. This second installment dealt more with the ‘human’ aspects of the story. Griffin has to deal with the fact that he is no longer a Terrae Angeli and must learn to deal with the day to day life of a normal teenager. On top of all of the new experiences in his life, he also has to deal with a new intrusion at home. We are introduced to a new character, Sergei, Basil’s newly appointed Tiro. Sergei added a great new element to the story. Sergei was a great force, but not overly evil. Not only was he a pain in Griffin’s butt, but poor, poor Basil. Having two teenage Tiro’s, one Wind and Water and the other Earth and Fire? Ya gotta feel for the man.

We also have seen the relationship between Griffin and Katie grow to an even deeper level. It has been kept on a PG13 level, but we can definitely feel their connection growing to a greater degree. Griffin has to deal with not being an angel, living a ‘normal’ life and having these feelings for a mortal girl and then we see Katie’s point of view. She has to deal with her growing feelings for Griffin as a ‘normal’ boy, yet knowing he is having a hard time being ‘normal’. Knowing that your boyfriend wishes he was someone else, someone that you most likely could not have a future with, because you would grow old and die and he would live on forever. That’s a lot for a girl to deal with.

While I loved the whole development of the characters and story, I really enjoyed the ending. The action of the first book resurfaced towards the end and a few twists and turns has made me even more excited for book 3…Griffin’s Storm. We are treated to a sneak-peak into book 3 and I must admit? I was bouncing once again. I look forward to seeing where book 3 takes Griffin and Basil. Darby Karchut cannot write fast enough for me!

I highly recommend this series to all the middle graders in your life. It is such a nice escape from the norm of YA out there right now. It’s nice to see a book from a male point of view and one with such an original storyline too. Well done, Darby!

My Review:

First off, the cover. I must admit that the cover for this second installment is much more appealing than the first. This cover somehow offsets the first one and I am finding myself liking the Darwin's Children cover more as seen as a set rather than on it's own.

Shall we talk about what's inside the cover, though? I loved this book! Author, Natasha Larry has created such an amazing series. I love that the focus still remains to be on love and family...or at least for me it is. This series is full of great, believable characters, lots of humor and some kick butt action!

The relationships between these characters are what keeps me so in tune and invested in this story. This is a highly character driven series...which I love! We not only got to know the main characters on a deeper level, but were also introduced to some new and exciting characters along the way. I am really enjoying the romance between Jaycie and Matt though. Matt has really grown through this second book and I have developed a VERY strong liking to this young man. Not only is he hot and funny, but his brain is wickedly sexy as well! What more could a girl ask for, really?

I honestly believe that this book and this series will be a huge success. It is something totally different from most other YA paranormal out there right now. The main thing that I love so much about this series is the strong family core...something severely lacking in most YA books today.

I can not say more really. If you are a lover of YA Paranormal? You MUST give Unnatural Law and this series a read. You will not be disappointed! Honestly! And Natasha? I am anxiously awaiting book 3! No rush, but I am waiting! ;0)

My Review:

First off? What a fun, fun, fun read this was! Kevin's Point of View quite honestly surprised me. Kevin and his best friend Tony, gave me many laugh out-loud moments. I love Kevin! I had read some other reviewers mention that Kevin's little 'episodes' with his imagination were very confusing and they did not enjoy them. I for one LOVED it! I guess for me, Kevin reminded me a lot of my oldest daughter...she has quite the vivid imagination as well. I kept her in mind as I read this book and I will be handing this book off to her soon. I KNOW she will LOVE it as much as Mom did!

This book is a funny, non-stop adventure. This is the perfect book for those reluctant readers in your life...especially boys. Okay yes, there might be some silliness too, but we are talking about a 12 yr old boy...hello? I really don't want to say too much about this one, other than GO read it! Is it life changing? No. Is it thought provoking? No. What it is? Fun! Funny! Delightful! Heartwarming! Oh and did I mention Fun?

I never read as a kid...ever! I so wish there had been books like this when I was young. I am lucky that my oldest daughter has found a love of reading at a young age. My youngest one? Not so much. I am always on the lookout for books with them in mind. It is books like Kevin's Point of View that get me so excited. It is books like this one that truly are what reading is all about to me. I can't wait to share this one with my little adventure lover!

Note to Del Shannon...we will be anxiously awaiting to hear more about Kevin and Tony! :0)

I really enjoyed this one. It was a cute, sweet story. The characters were very likable and believable. I guess, my only real complaint would be, that the character and story development took a little too long and the adventure/magic did not happen until the end of the story. I felt the story could have been longer or perhaps another book is needed. I would say that being a YA book, it would not be something that I could see passing to a reluctant reader. I don't think there would be enough to keep them engaged in this one. However, if you have a YA reader that devours everything? They would enjoy this one for sure. Being an adult reading this one? It really was a delightful, enjoyable little book and I would definitely read other books by Michelle Isenhoff that follow along with this genre.

My Review:

I really enjoyed this book. However, I am having a hard time rating it or even really forming a clear opinion on this one. It was enjoyable and I connected with the main character, Kaelyn...most of the time. I will admit to finding her a bit inconsistent. Or maybe it was the authors writing style? The book was written in the form of letters written from Kaelyn to her childhood friend/crush, Leo. At times the book read like a Diary and others it was more of a novel. I was finding myself a little confused on the whole relationship between Kaelyn and Leo. Honestly, right up to the end. And I still am. But that aside, I enjoyed the journey and found The Way We Fall to be a real page turner.

I did not, however, like the ending at all. It ended much to abruptly for me. I re-read the last few sentences over and over. I kept thinking I missed something, or I was missing pages. I understand that there is to be 2 more books in this series. I would have been quite happy for this to be a stand alone, if it had ended better.

In the end if you are a Dystopian fan, I would recommend this one. It is definitely not one of the best Dystopian's I have read. But if you are looking for a something a little less dark, this might be a good one to start with.

Mini Review:

I enjoyed Variant. It was definitely different. Not too sure if I would call it a Dystopian or not and if it is truly being put out there as a Dystopian? It's just okay. I found myself having a hard time deciding whether this was set in a future world or in current times.

While I did like the main character, Benson, I did not find myself overly connected with any of the characters. There were a few that stood out a bit more than others, but I never felt fully connected with anyone.

However, with all of that aside, I would be interested to read the next installment to see where these characters and story go. There are still many unanswered questions for me. If you are looking for something different and a story that keeps you guessing and you don't have a problem with a major cliffhanger... I would recommend Variant.

My Review:

Ashfall was one of my first books from Net Galley and I was very excited it give it a read. Dystopian/ Post-Apocalyptic are fast becoming my first choice. I know, I know. A lot of people are devouring these too. I know a lot of people out there are saying, but why? They are so dark and depressing. Okay yes, there are certainly dark moments, but you know what? There is so much good and light within these dark tales. The one thing that I love about Dystopian is that there are always those characters that rise above and show that even when times are dark, at the core of humanity we are mostly good. These characters bring to light the true testament of the human nature and our willingness to fight for what is right and our strength to survive. And this is what I loved so much about Ashfall.

At it's core, this is a book based on characters and what those characters will do in order to survive and to keep those they love alive. Yes, this is about a Super Volcano. Yes, there is a whole science aspect to this story and no it is not really dealt with in great detail, but that is not what this book was about for me. I don't know if the scientific stuff is believable. Quite frankly, I don't care. The basic premise was good enough for me. What I loved about this book was Alex. Alex's story begins with a BANG! Quite literally. And it does not stop. We see Alex grow from beginning to end and I for one enjoyed every step of the way. I connected right away to this character. He is this normal teenage boy when we first meet him...about to be left alone for the weekend while his family is off visiting other family in another state. Cool? Not! Alex's life comes crashing down on him in a matter of a few pages and so his journey to find his family begins. Right from the start, Alex is forced to grow up quickly due to the situations he is forced to be apart of and witness. Many are terrifying and heartbreaking to say the least. Along the way he meets up with many characters. Some are good but some are the true definition of evil. I don't like to put too many spoilers into my reviews, but I will say that the author, Mike Mullin, did a fantastic job of throwing enough at Alex to keep the readers wanting more and worrying constantly for Alex's wellbeing.

Halfway through Alex's journey, he meets, Darla. Darla, Darla, Darla. I love Darla. She is this amazing 18yr old girl who has grown up on a farm and learning absolutely everything from her father and then after his death, she continues to learn on her own. Darla is amazing. She is beautiful, smart, snarky and just plain cool. The relationship that develops between Alex and Darla is perfect. It is not over done and just feels natural considering everything that they go through together.

The ending of this one was also perfect - for me anyway. There is no big huge cliff hanger. Which is too often the norm in YA as of late. It ended leaving you with the knowledge that there is more to Alex and Darla's story. I for one will be anxiously waiting the next instalment, Ashen Winter.

My Review:

Dark Eden is a unique story. I had difficulties getting into the story at first. I felt a bit confussed and quite frankly never truly felt a connection to any of the characters. That being said, I felt intriqued enough to continue reading, Dark Eden. I needed to find out the truth. The reason these teens were brought together. In the end. I found the story quite intriging. I am not too sure that I love the way in which the story unfolded and developed throughout the book, but on a whole, Dark Eden is a story unlike other YA books right now. I am not sure if there are any other books planned for this story, but I would be interested to read another book. I for one, would love to know if Will Besting goes through with his 60 year pact.

In the end. I would recommend this one if you are looking for something a little different. If you enjoy being teased and intrigued right up to the very end. However, if you need a strong character connection, this might not live up to your expectations.

I just wanted to pop by and explain why I have not been posting lately. I started a new job at the beginning of Sept and my available reading time has been drastically slashed! I am still reading...every chance I get. But it is definitely slow going. Thus, my posting is going to be very sporadic. I am still popping in on my favorite blogs, but my own blogging is going to be suffering. I am not going to stop completely, but it may come to that...we will see.

My Mini Review:

Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes is a fantasy adventure that will be sure to delight young readers 10+. Peter is a unique and interesting character, but I must admit that I was more drawn to some of the secondary characters. Mainly, Sir Tode. Not only visually is he a great character, being part Knight, part kitty and part horse, but Sir Tode provides many laughs and many touching moments. I felt a real connection to him and loved him throughout the book.

The first half of the book was a great fantasy and something I could definitely see myself recommending to all the young fantasy lovers in my life. It felt like I was in for an exciting fun adventure. However, halfway through, I found the book lost something. It felt long and I just felt myself being easily distracted. I will admit to skimming through the last half. There were many plot aspects that were quite predictable and I just felt disconnected to the whole thing. I do plan to put this one aside and give it another read at another time though. I think that this book is one that would be better suited to be read-aloud and enjoyed by a group of young adventure lovers. But maybe that's just me.

In the end, I would recommend this to all adventure, fantasy lovers 10+. There are some great characters and great world building, even if I was not fully convinced.

My Review:

When I was approached by author Natasha Larry to review her book, Darwin's Children, I will admit that the cover turned me off somewhat. However, after reading the synopsis, I was eager to give it a read. I am very glad that I did not judge this book by it's cover. Darwin's Children was a refreshing change from many other YA Paranormal. At it's core, this book drills home a message of love and family. I truly enjoyed the family dynamics.

The main character, Jaycie Lerner, is a great voice for teens. She is strong, loving, caring and smart, but still remains positive even when faced with difficulties. However, a lot of that has to do with the loving family surrounding her. Jaycie's father, Mason Lerner, is an amazing man. He's smart, loving and protective of his daughter and family. He truly is a great example to all parents. I loved seeing the love between this Father and Daughter. In addition to Jaycie's father is her surrogate Mother/Nanny/Trainer, Allison Young. Allison is a great character. She is funny, smart, strong, sexy and just plain fun. It is her responsibility to train Jaycie to control her telekinetic powers. Also, being the only other female in the family, she takes it upon her self to deal with all the 'girlie' issues that arise. Sometimes whether Jaycie wants the help or not.

Of course no YA Paranormal would be complete without a little romance. Luckily for Jaycie, and us, she has her childhood best friend turned boyfriend, Matt Carter. Matt is very sweet and truly loves Jaycie. The romance was perfect. Not overdone and it was well balanced within the confines of the story. It did not take over as I have found too often happens in YA Paranormal.

We are also introduced to a pivotal character about 60 pages in. Haylee Michell is this broken, beaten shell of a girl who, with the love and caring shown from both Jaycie and her family, begins her transformation not only as a human but also as a superhuman. As we are introduced to Haylee, things start to shift and by the last few chapters, Darwin's Children, takes a bit of a darker turn from the light YA Paranormal we were enveloped in. I have read a few reviews that left some reviewers feeling that the ending was rushed and took too drastic a turn. Although, perhaps the ending was a bit rushed, I actually enjoyed the direction the story has begun to travel and look forward to the next installment.

In the end, I would recommend Darwin's Children to all lovers of YA Paranormal. If you are tired of characters that wallow in self pity and a lifetime of impending doom, this will be sure to give you a great read. I for one will be sure to keep my eye out for Natasha Larry's next installment in this series.

My Review:

When approached by author Ciye Cho to review his book, Shiewo - A Fantasy Flight to Adventure, I was somewhat reluctant. This was definitely a book out of my normal reading realm. After taking a peak at the author's website, I realized that this was definitely an individual with loads of imagination and drive. I also decided that sometimes it's good to go outside our comfort zones and expand our minds.

During the first 50 pages of this adventure I will admit to questioning my decision. I was definitely in for one wild ride. However, around that 50 page mark things started to fall into place and I really started to understand the world of Orberana and it's fantastical characters.

Captain Shiewo Morose is a great female character. She is a strong, smart no-nonsense girl trying to find the Wishing Fish to save her man. All the while surrounded by her...well...interesting crew. Let's see. There is Theo, the cloud/runaway tornado cadet. There's Erduu, the walking, talking bamboo man. Also, along for the journey is, Livingston, the black goldfish...oops, sorry. He does not like to be called a goldfish! Livingston provided many laughs. He's loud, demanding and super snarky. Gotta love him! Lastly is Felix Dabblezapp. The human castaway who discovers that what he thought was a strange and wondrous dream is all very real.

Many times throughout this story it felt very much like I was in a strange Wizard of Oz adventure. I'm not saying that was bad or good, just an observation.

In the end, Shiewo - A Fantasy Flight to Adventure, was a strange and wondrous tale filled with a cast of fun and fantastical characters. This story would definitely appeal to YA and Adult readers who enjoy fantasy/sci-fi with highly imaginative characters. While this is not something you would normally find on my bookshelf? I definitely plan to read the next installment to see where the journey takes these wonderful characters next and to see if they ever find the Wishing Fish.

I finished this book a few days ago and absolutely LOVED it, so I thought I would share it with you.

My body curled and seized, ridden with shame. In School and out of School, I had believed that love was a liability - something that could be wielded against you. I began to weep, finally knowing the truth: love was death's only adversary, the only thing powerful enough to combat its clawing desperate grasp.

My Review:

One of the great pleasures I get from reading is finding THAT book. The one that comes out of nowhere and catches you by surprise. Yes, I requested this book from NetGalley. I knew what it was about. But to be honest, I was not expecting a lot. I had seen some reviews and they ones I had read were not all that encouraging. You know what? I totally fell for this book and these characters right from chapter one. Anna Carey has written a phenomenal Dystopian that I completely devoured. The writing in this book left me breathless, sad, happy, VERY teary at times, hopeful, giddy...the point is? Anna Carey did exactly what I crave in a book. I felt EVERYTHING these characters felt and so much more.

Eve was a character that I could easily connect with. She has spent almost her entire life within the walls of the School. She has grown up being told that men are evil and not to be trusted. All men except for the King. On the eve of her graduation she learns the truth about her world and what her future actually holds. The truth is so terrifyingly horrific, she decides to run away into the wild. With the aide of a secret someone, she is told of a place out West - Califia - where they will take in orphan girls and protect them. And so Eve's journey begins. I love how Eve grows throughout the book. She stays true to who she is, but grows as a woman and as a human. The relationship with Arden was a great addition to this journey. Even though Arden is tough at times, deep down I always knew she was a good person. She definitely added some great conflicts and funny moments for me.

Okay. Here it is. We now have to talk about Caleb. First off. Just the name, Caleb, gets my heart beating faster. I have always had a thing for the name. And he totally lives up to the name. Can you say hot, hot, hot? Yes, Caleb found his way into my heart right from the very first sight of him. Caleb is not only hot, but confident. Not overly, not in your face. He makes you feel safe, taken care of. Oh wait. I mean, Eve. He takes care of Eve. Caleb is strong and so very protective of those he cares about. The connection between Eve and Caleb was perfect. Some have said that they thought Eve was not as wary of Caleb and men in general considering the way she was raised. However, I did not feel that way at all. She had a lot of inner apprehension, but she also was forced into the realization that what she knew to be true was all a lie. And meeting Caleb was definitely the perfect way to sway her!

There has been a lot of talk about comparisons to Twilight. Huh? I don't get that at all! To me, there is 0 comparisons. Also, many have said that this is a Wither rip-off and a bad one. Well, maybe the reason I loved Eve so much is that I was not a fan of Wither. In the end, I completely recommend this book to all Dystopian lovers. If you love characters you can instantly connect with, and love an amazing couple to root for? Go pick up a copy of Eve when it hits bookshelves. Oh, and? Just a little warning. Author Anna Carey has left us with a heart wrenching cliffhanger!

My Review:

Forbidden is an action packed thrill ride for all lovers of Dystopian/Fantasy with some religious base. After reading Ted Dekker's Circle Trilogy, I became an instant fan. I was so excited to see Forbidden come up on NetGalley and even more excited to see it in my galley! While I am not familiar with the writings of Tosca Lee, the collaboration between these two authors is truly breathtaking.

The beginnings of this story had a true Dystopian feel, which of course I love. But as the story moved along it also grew into this amazing, fantastic, epic journey filled with love, betrayal, death, swords, blood and oh so much more!

The story centers around Rom. A twenty-four year old average young man. Rom's world is turned quite literally turned upside down as the true origins of the Order, the world he knows to be true has all been a lie. Throughout the book we see Rom grow from this average young man to a true hero of epic proportion. No he does not have special powers or have amazing fighting skills, but as he learns the truth he discovers what is right and what is wrong. With this new knowledge he vows to fight for what is right and to protect those he loves.

I absolutely love the connection between Rom and Avra. There is no unrealistic hot lusty love at first sight nonsense. These two have grown up within a society without love, or any emotion other than fear. Yet, deep down they have both felt an unexplainable connection to one another, without ever knowing what love is. This felt so real, so powerful. I loved it!

In true Ted Dekker style, Forbidden is of course filled with darkness, evil at it's finest. And while this book may not have been as dark as I would have expected it was felt with the addition of Saric. Saric is the perfect image of evil. He too, has the knowledge of the true origins of the Order, and being the evil one he is? He has plans to bring his evilness to the world. Saric is one of those characters that I lovingly loathe. He has an insatiable thirst for women and power and a quite repulsive thirst for his half-sister, Feyn.

Feyn, is the beautiful soon to-be Sovereign. She has lived her life for this moment. But soon she too will learn the truth about the Order and must make a decision that could alter her destiny and the world forever.

In the end, I would recommend Forbidden to anyone who enjoys Dystopian/Fantasy, with lots of action. If you love strong memorable characters you will not be disappointed. While there are certainly faith/religious based elements, it is not in your face as Ted Dekker's Circle Trilogy was. This is the beginning of what I anticipate will be a phenomenal series. This book once again solidifies my love of Ted Dekker and has me looking forward to reading more books by Tosca Lee.

My Review:

Going into Misfit, I was not too sure what to expect. After an okay first chapter, I was pleasantly drawn in. The book switches back and forth between present day and the past. During these flash backs not only do we learn the back story of the main character Jael, but also her parents and Uncle. It's these flash backs that were the highlight for me. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about how Jaels demon mother and ex-priest father came together. We get to see how the circumstances surrounding Jael's mother's death, directly effect her father and the reason he is the way he is. We also get to see the relationship between Jael's mother and Uncle. I just have to say I absolutely love Uncle Dagon! Here is this demon Fish King, monsterish in looks, but a big teddy bear at heart. Really he is just a big, scaly kid. He brings a lot of laughs and heart warming moments to this story. As per Jael's mother's wishes, it is Dagon's responsibility to help Jael bring out and develop her demon powers. I really enjoyed seeing the whole process and watch the relationship between Uncle and niece develop.

The relationship between Jael and Rob was sweet. Rob is quite funny and truly believes in Jael and her potential. Although at times I found it to be a bit...well silly maybe.

Speaking of silly. I did have some issues with some of the "Hell" aspects to this story. Some of the images of "Hell" just seemed more comical than, Hellish. To me at least.

In the end, I would definitely recommend Misfit to anyone who is a fan of YA Paranormal. It was an enjoyable, fun read and I will definitely read any future writings of Jon Skovron.

My Review:

I love, love, love this book! Many times I was left breathless and filled with so much emotion. The tears were overflowing and the stomach was over-turning! Ashes is definitely one of my top reads of 2011!

The connection to this story began instantly with Alex, the main character. Here is this girl, who at the age of seventeen, has already been through more heartbreak and obstacles than most adults will see their entire lives. And then, the unthinkable happens.

The world building within this book is why I love post-apocalyptic dystopian so much. There is just enough truthful fact to make this story so terrifyingly believable. And throughout the story you keep asking yourself, 'What would I do'? 'Would I survive'?

Ilsa J Bick's characters, despite the horrific situations they are forced to with stand, are so full of life, strength and love. And because of this, it was easy to connect and fall in love with Alex, Tom and Ellie. I whole heartily felt every victory and heartbreak along with them. But then Alex's life is turned upside down yet again as she is thrown into the town of Rule and separated from Tom and Ellie.

The dynamics within Rule are very cult-like as Alex quickly learns. Rule is very mysterious and creepy as is the council that oversees all. I love it! The town is also filled with more dynamic characters like Jess, Kincaid, the Reverend and Chris. Each of these characters has a pivotal role in Alex's life within Rule. And then a few play a crucial role as Alex is forced to learn the truth about Rule in the heart stopping final pages.

In the end, I recommend this book to all! If you are already a lover of post-apocalyptic dystopian you will devour Ashes. If you are new to the genre and the mention of 'zombies' makes you cringe? Take a chance. I promise you will love it. It is so worth the read and getting to know Alex, Tom, Ellie, Jess, Kincaid, Chris and the town of Rule. I will be reserving a spot on my bookshelf for Ashes and counting down for the next book. I will also be looking for every book ever written by Ilsa J Bick!!

My Review:

What a fun, fun, fun read this was. I was pleasantly surprised by this one!

Elly Blair is this sweet girl who I immediately fell in love with. She is funny and snarky all while trying to keep her southern charm in check. The town of Mystic Hollow is filled with quirky characters - this is my kind of town! Elly's best friend, Mary Jane, had me laughing throughout. The two of them together are very funny and perfect best friends. They differ in many ways yet blend together so well.

Not only is there one, but two hotties in this one. I honestly don't know who's team I am on more. Rory Covington is the hunky southern farm owner who gets caught up in Elly's magical mess. He is super sweet and full of southern charm. Tom Owenton is the hunky National Organization for Magic Investigator sent to help Elly fix her magic mess up. I think I am leaning towards Tom. I have a soft spot for funny, snarky, slightly cocky and oh so sexy.

Elly's grandmother is awesome. I love her. I just wish she made more of an appearance. Let's just say that grandma Imelda stole the show, when she was around. I want her to adopt me! I really hope that she makes an appearance in the next books.

In the end, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. While this may contain some silliness? We all need something light, refreshing and fun once in awhile and this most certainly delivers. This is a great summer read! I can not wait to see where the next book takes Elly. I really hope we see more of Rory, Tom and Mary Jane as well.

My Review:

The Eye of the Crystal Ball is an epic fantasy filled with adventure, wonderful creatures and some great life lessons. Aside from a one sentence reference to a rape, at the hands of a snake-wizard, this is a story suited to all fantasy readers ages 10 and up. If you are a lover of fantastical creatures, this book is sure to satisfy. Within the 22 chapters you will meet a werewolf boy, sorceress, witches, a speed talking giant snail, a griffin, a black dragon, a bogwoman, elves, Will-o'-the-wisps, a handfull of creatures turned into various weird creatures at the hands of the evil Sensisaron, pegasis and of course a unicorn.

However, aside from the adventure and characters, The Eye of the Crystal Ball left me feeling very conflicted. To be perfectly honest, this book on a whole is in need of an editing overhaul. I am not a writer or an editor, but when a book is filled with this many spelling/grammatical errors and a few inconsistances within the story? It is just too distracting. I know that the author has had her books translated into various languages for publication, and it is quite possible that that is where the issue stems from. But from a personal stand point, this was too much of a distraction for me.

In the end, editing issues aside, the story at it's core and the characters are definitely a wonderful fantasy for young readers. I just hope that the next book in this series is given the editing overhaul that it deserves.

My review:

The sleepwalkers is an eerie, creepy tale filled with mystery and some very horrific characters and images. While it was definitely a page turner, I did have some issues with this book. The most predominant being that the beginning read more like a movie script than an actual novel. And, because of this, I really had a hard-time fully connecting with these characters in the beginning. I did feel a change a quarter of the way in though, and really started to get into the story.

Although Caleb was the main character, his best friend Bean really stole the scenes. Bean is this funny, snarky, often crude but deep down great guy. He is full of personality and just fun to read. They really are a great team, but on his own Caleb could have used a little more personality.

The relationship between Caleb and Christine was perfect, however. All to often in YA fiction you have these characters that fall madly in love within the first few pages and it is so unbelievable and quite frankly insulting. This relationship however, is very real and very natural. There could be some argument that the relationship is not believable due to the length of time these two were apart, but I disagree. I for one have had childhood friends who I have been estranged from over the years, who I have reconnected with and it felt as though we had never been apart. These are true connections - the ones that really matter. This is what Caleb and Christine have and I loved that.

I really feel that this book could easily be adapted to film and do very well. It is a very visual book. In the end, although the ending was somewhat predictable and slightly anti-climatic, I would recommend it. If you are looking for a creepy, bone chilling, page turner? You will find it within the pages of The Sleepwalkers. I am interested to see where the author, J Gabriel Gates, goes from here.

My review:

At the request of the publishers, my review will not be available until 30 days prior to release date. I will say this though? If you are a fan of post apocalyptic dystopian? You are sure to devour this book! The fact that there is an element of 'this could actually happen', makes this one hell of a ride and an outstanding debut by Mike Mullin! Stay tuned for my full review closer to release. In the meantime be sure to add it to your TBR list or better yet head over to Net Galley and request a review copy!

My review:

Intoxication is a short story consisting of 31 pages. I am not normally a big fan of short stories, mainly due to there is never enough time to get invested in the story or the characters. I will admit that the first 14 pages felt a bit choppy and disjointed, however by page 15 I really got into the story. The last half flowed nicely and I was very interested to see where the story and characters were going to go. I don't want to give too much away, but I really did connect with these characters and what brought them to the end. It was a good suspenseful read. I would like to see this one made into a longer version.

The second story included was Hitchhiker. This again was a short story of only 13 pgs. This one I did not enjoy as much as the first one. Again I found the writing to be choppy and disjointed and I really did not find myself connecting with the story all that much. I think there needed to be more to this one to get fully invested in these characters and their story.

Rating: 2.5 stars

The third short story The Bike was way too short and quite frankly just plain silly for me. A man gets framed for a robbery all in an attempt to get back at him for killing his neighbors dog. Not enough substance for me.

My review:

After I first purchased my ereader, I decided to see what kind of free books were out there. I found this one at the kobo bookstore and thought it sounded like a good one. There really is not much to say about this one. While the story line was something different, the execution fell short. I felt there should have been some major editing done to this book. I am not a writer, publisher or editor, but I am a reader and this one just felt very choppy. The beginning of the book had a good flow and I did feel connected with the main character Scott Waverly, but then after a few chapters it just gradually fell apart. I found most of the action scenes were rushed and it was over before it really began. The romance between the main character Scott and Val was very forced and I felt it was just there for a token romance.

In the end, it was not a terrible read, just not all that great either. If you are looking for something light to pass the time, perhaps give this one a read.

My review:

I love visiting my favorite blogs for new book finds and I also love to visit Goodreads. I was on Goodreads one day and taking a look through some of my favorite authors book reviews and came across this one on Maggie Stiefvater's Goodreads page. It was highly recommended by Maggie, so of course I had to give it a read! You know what? I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed this story and the characters. I realize that it might not be for everyone as blood plays a huge part in this story. But I really enjoyed it! It was something different, dark and a little creepy...okay, maybe a lot creepy.

Silla and Nick were both enjoyable on their own and as a couple. I will admit that Nick calling Silla, Babe all the time was a bit annoying for me. I just found it a bit out of character or just not all that fitting for either of them. Just a little annoyance of mine. Other than that, I found them both to be quite believable even in the middle of a pretty unbelievable situation. Poor Silla has been through so much when we first meet her - she is the one to find both of her parents dead and in a bloody embrace - and she continues to be at the centre of even more blood and creepiness. I really enjoyed how each chapter switches back and forth between Silla and Nick. I really find that I enjoy this style as we get a better understanding of each of the main characters and get more invested in each of them as individuals.

I will admit this review is not all that in depth. I finished this one while I was off on a camping trip last week and was not able to write my review right away as I usually like to do. However, in the end, I definitely recommend this one if you are looking for something a little different from your normal YA paranormal. If you like your YA darker, creepier and little bloodier? You will definitely devour this one!

My review:

Once upon a time there was a story, unlike any other story. It was a brilliant, creepy, heartwarming, adventure full of unforgettable characters of epic proportion. The name of that story? Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

I found this book one day while wandering through blogland. As soon as I read the premise, I knew it was something I wanted to read. Then I saw the book trailer! I can honestly say that this trailer is the single best trailer I have seen to date. I have watched it many, many times. Then? I heard that they are going to be making the movie. I had to read this book! I will admit I was nervous when it arrived in the mail this week. What if it did not live up to the expectations I had for it? After the first page? All my worries were crushed and exploded on impacted! Do you remember the feeling that first book gave you? The one that took you away, to another world, another time and left you breathless and excited? This is what this book did to me. It took me back, back to a time, to a place in my heart where magic lives.

Words can not express how much I love this book! Just as Harry Potter, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland and so many others have become Classics? So to, shall Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children...at least in my heart and soul. Every single one of these characters are brilliant, no matter how minor their role. They have all left their mark on my heart and I will never forget them.

In making my decision to purchase this amazing book, I decided to buy the hardcover instead of the ebook, my choice of reading format as of late. I am so very, very happy with my choice. Why? You need to have the hardcover to get the full effect and experience of this book. The book is filled with these creepy old vintage photos that add so much to this whole amazing experience known as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

In the end? I 100% recommend that EVERYONE read this book. It is for young and old and truly is a Classic in the making. Now watch these trailers and tell me you are not enticed and in need of devouring more!

My review:

We have all heard the phrase, 'Don't judge a book by it's cover', right? I must admit that too often I am a bit of a cover snob. You know. I see a cover and think, this is gonna be an awesome read, or, this one looks terrible. Well, that's how I felt about this one. When it first came out and I was seeing it EVERYWHERE in blog land, I thought it looked like something my 9 year old would want to read. I never paid too much attention. Then I started reading really good reviews. This week I was looking at books on my Library ebook list and found it sitting there, waiting for me. So I caved and decided to give it a read. You know what? I was pleasantly surprised. I actually quite enjoyed this one.

The main character Kate was funny, intelligent and very likable. I found myself connecting with her almost instantly. I absolutely loved Seth, Kate's next door neighbor. I have read some reviews that complained about him and thought he was kind of pointless. I disagree totally. Seth is this nerdy, conspiracy theory obsessed, Kate obsessed adorable kid! I loved, loved, loved, Seth. The budding romance between Kate and Liam was perfect. It was not over done, subtle and very sweet. Anything more would have been a let down and a distraction from the main story. The mystery throughout the book was very enjoyable and the pacing was perfect. I never found the story slow or drawn out at any point. It was a fun page turner.

In the end? I found The Liar Society to be a fun, light read with a very enjoyable main character. If you are looking for a light mystery, I would definitely recommend this one!

My Review:

Timeless, while nothing spectacular or thought provoking, was a nice light and enjoyable read. Sometimes that is exactly what you need. A total escape. And Timeless definitely delivered.

I loved the idea and the story. I have always loved the idea of Time Travel and the history associated with this book was fascinating. Alexandra Monir did a fantastic job of taking you to the heart of New York City during the 1900's, the 1920's and the 1940's. It was exciting and often breathtaking.

However, I did not feel a strong connection to the main characters of the book. Michele and Philip were interesting enough, but their relationship felt very forced and too easy for me. Like too many other YA Paranormal/Fantasy Romance the romance was just not all that believable. I was more drawn to Michele's time travels and her meetings with the female relatives from the past. One of my favorite characters was Michele's Great Grandmother, Lily. When we first meet Lily, she is this young spunky girl just itching to make it in the music business during the roaring 20's. Being able to see Lily, through Michele's eyes was very heartwarming and just a fun part of this story for me.

In the end, if you are looking for a fun, light read? I would recommend it. It is not a life altering experience, but still enjoyable. I do look forward to seeing where Alexandra Monir takes these characters and the story in the next book.

My review:

Where do I begin? How do I find the words? Rotters is one of those books that leaves you speechless, numb, breathless, disgusted and creeped out, but all in a good way.

Rotters is a story of a boy who goes through hell and back. The pain that Joey goes through, both physical and mental is truly heartbreaking. As a mother and human being I could not help but want to protect him. Even more heartbreaking is the fact that the bullying that Joey is forced to withstand, although extreme? Happens to numerous kids across North America on a daily basis. Although, what happens to us during our lives should not define us as human beings? All too often it can and does.

This book is not a happy story by any means. It is not for the faint of heart or for those with a weak stomach. It took me a little longer to get through this book, simply due to the fact that I had to put it down frequently and regroup before continuing. It should most definitely be read on an empty stomach!

In the end, would I recommend this book? I whole heartily believe this is not for a younger reader. I would recommend this for the 16+ readers. But, yes. If you are prepared to have both your heart and gut wrenched from your body? Give this one a read.

My review:

This is a hard review for me to write. The first 50 pages or so I was so excited. I connected with the story and the characters right away and felt that this was going to be an amazing ride. However, it was just okay for me. It kind of fizzled and just left me longing for something more, something was missing. I can't really put my finger on it and say for sure what it was. It was just, okay.

The two main characters Ellie and Will had great chemistry and were very enjoyable. Ellie has a lot to deal with as she learns who she really is and what she really is. Most of the time I found her character to be quite believable, but there were times that it was all a little force and rushed for me. Will too was quite believable most of the time, but he too at times felt a little inconsistent. I realize that he had some inner struggles that he was dealing with, but at times I just found the core of his character too conflicting. I found most of Ellie's friends to be just fluff and not too much substance for me. Ellie's mother was interesting and definitely had some depth to her. I look forward to seeing where her character goes in the next book. Now. Ellie's father. I am not too sure about this character. The man is evil and scary and I was expecting something important to come from this character. But nothing ever happened. I am left with a lot questions and perhaps they will be answered in the next book. But I am just left with an overwhelming feeling of...well, nothing really. I kind of lost all connection for these characters and the story.

In the end? Would I recommend it? If you are fan of paranormal, angels and the Fallen? Then yes, give it a read and see for yourself. I know many readers/reviewers have loved this book. I am not saying I did not like it, I am just left feeling very underwhelmed. I will definitely read the next book in the series. I just hope that it packs more of a punch.

My Review:

When word of this book first started floating around. I was excited to read it. Then I began to hear little tid bits about the controversy surrounding it. I am not going to go into a long winded tangent. If you don't know what I am referring to and want more info you can read about it HERE.

I had put the book out of my mind and then started seeing all the movie previews. I always read the book before seeing the movie and since Alex Pettyfer was the star? Well, I knew I HAD to see the movie. Thus, I decided to give the book a read.

I admit, the first 50 pages had me really questioning my decision. I found the writing to be very disjointed and the story very slow. Thankfully the story kicked in for me soon after. However, it felt as though two different authors were at the helm. I had that feeling a few times throughout the book. I really started to enjoy it and felt connected to it an then it all came to a halt once again. The last 100 pages really came together though.

The two main characters, John - Number Four - and Henri - John's Keeper - were great together. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow and blossom into this amazing pseudo father/son connection. One of the best aspects of this story for me was when John's legacy's started to show and the anticipation of more to follow. The prospect of becoming flame retardant, being able to become invisible, as well as the things you touch - John's Grandfather had this ability - and being able to communicate with animals. How cool would that be?

Aside from John and Henri? One of my favorite characters was, Sam, John's best friend. Sam is this alien conspiracy theory obsessed geek. But aside from that, he is loyal, funny and brave when he truly needs to be. I can not wait to see where this character goes from here into the next book.

The best character of this book though? Bernie Kosar. The Beagle. I adore books with dogs, but being a Beagle owner myself? I fell in love. I knew the instant Bernie was introduced that there HAD to be something special about him. I was not disappointed!

In the end? Thanks to the last 100 pages being filled with great characters, an interesting story and non-stop action, I look forward to the next installment. And of course, I must now see the movie. Alex Pettyfer awaits!

Sam runs into his room and comes out with a backpack. He sets it on the kitchen counter and goes to change his clothes. I peer inside of it. There is a crucifix, a few cloves of garlic, a wooden stake, a hammer, a blob of Silly Putty, and a pocketknife.

"You do realize these people aren't vampires, right?" I say when Sam walks back in.

"Yeah, but you never know. They're probably crazy, like you said."

"And even if we were hunting vampires, what the hell is the Silly Putty for?"

He shrugs. "Just want to be prepared."

My Review:

One of the biggest draws to a book is how it makes me feel. Strong characters are also a deal breaker. If I can not relate to the main characters there is nothing holding me there. Divergent came through on all levels and more. I love this book! OMG! I mean I really loved this book! This is most definitely my favorite read of 2011 thus far.

These characters are amazing. I think of Tris as my secret inner self. Or I should say my secret alternate universe self. You know. The one where I am brave and strong and adventurous. She is small, yet strong, focused, brave, loving, selfless and she has some pretty cool tattoos. Through her rigorous and often terrifying Dauntless training, we see her grown and blossom into this kick-butt heroine. Then there is Four. Four...Four...Four. My heart belongs to Four. I am a 40yr old mother of two and I am not ashamed to admit it! Four is this amazing, strong, brave, intense, damaged, loving, intelligent, funny, sexy and fearless...almost...man...okay, young man. But yes. He really is all that and so much more.

There is so much intensity within the pages of this book and so much I could talk about. However, I don't like to include spoilers in my reviews. I will say this though? One of my favorite moments, is the knife throwing scene. The intensity of that stare between Tris and Four was brilliantly brought to life by Veronica Roth. I was inside Tris's head. I could feel the air, the looks and the inner realization of what her selflessness had brought her to. Brilliant! This is where my love of Four and Tris was born.

While Tris and Four are amazing, there are many other characters who deserve just as much praise. There are always those characters that we love to hate. Eric...the main Dauntless trainer...and Peter...one of Tris's fellow initiates...are the perfect villains. These two have evil running through their veins. Tris's two closest friends, Christina and Will were also among my favorites. These two provided many funny, touching and heartbreaking moments for me.

This dystopian world created by Veronica Roth, really worked for me. It was believable as were these characters. If you are a fan of YA Dystopian and are tired of the mind numbing love triangles? Then grab a copy today! Go! Now! I plan to read this one over and over again until book #2 comes out!

Rating: 5+!!

Review:

After reading that blurb off of Goodreads again...well, I am not sure why I have read this. It is not something I would normally pick up. However, there has been so much hype on this one, I caved and decided to give it a read. I will start off by saying that I will not get into the 'morality' issue of this one. Everyone has their own belief system and own morals in which they live by. I will say though, that I am not sure that I would recommend this book for younger teens. I just feel the subject matter is not really appropriate for the younger YA reader. That aside...

The overall storyline is different. However, this book has been put out there as a YA Dystopian series. I kind of have issues with that. While there are certainly Dystopian elements to it, I would definitely not class this a true Dystopian. The majority of the story takes place within the walls of

The House Governor's mansion. Yes, there are elements within the compound that are futuristic, but we never really get a feel for how the world outside the compound exists. There are glimpses, but I never felt fully introduced to the world on a whole.

Our main character Rhine, is a 16 yr old girl who has been kidnapped and separated from her twin brother Rowan. She is one of three girls chosen to be one of the next sister wives of the House Governor, Linden. I really enjoyed getting to know Rhine and her sister wives. Rhine is forced into this marriage along with 13 yr old Cecily and 18 yr old Jenna. Both Rhine and Jenna know that what has happened to them is so very wrong, while Cecily is very young and has been easily tainted into thinking that this is the best thing to happen to her. The things that have happened to each of these girls before and during their 'captivity' is truly heartbreaking. I know many reviewers have had issues with Cecily being too whiny. But I think you have to realize that this is a 13 year-old girl. She has been married and now expected to have a child for this man...well actually many children. It is a very delicate situation to say the least. And that would be why I find it hard to review this one. I did enjoy the characters on a whole and also the developing friendship/love between Rhine and Gabriel. I guess just the overall feel and heart of this story is just something I am having a hard time relating to and believing. There are just too many holes in this world for me to really connect with it.

This is the first book in a series, but I honestly do not know that I will be waiting for the second installment. Would I recommend it? Only if you want to see for yourself what all the hype is about.

Review: May Contain Spoilers!

I discovered this book and series through author Darby Karchut. She told me this was one of her favorite series. So I thought, I must give it a read! I am very glad I did.

What I mainly enjoyed about this book, was the relationship between the two main characters, Will and Halt. When we first meet Will he is about to find out if his life long ambition of becoming a warrior apprentice is finally going to come true. But unfortunately, his wish is not to be and he learns that he has been chosen by, Halt, to become his Ranger apprentice. As the story unfolds, we see Will grow into himself and develop into a strong and more confident young man and Ranger apprentice. On the other side is Halt. I adore Halt. He is full of strength, love, humour and loyalty, but all wrapped up in a very understated small stature of a man.

I love that one of the main messages author, John Flanagan, portrays in this story is that not all heroes are big strong warrior types. Sometimes a hero can be an ordinary boy. Sometimes all it takes is courage and faith in yourself. I also love the fact that John Flanagan originally wrote this story for his son, Michael, as a way to get the reluctant reader excited about books. How cool is that?

Another aspect of this book, which stands out for me, is the bullying issue. I know that I have seen a few reviews in which readers were a bit disappointed in how Halt encouraged Horace to deal the same punishment back onto his tormentors. I for one did not have issues with this at all. This poor kid has been beaten, tormented and belittled for months. The final beating was extremely harsh and terrifying. A person can only be expected to endure so much! I don't agree with violence solving anything, but sometimes? Well, it is, what it is and they were beaten fairly.

I will admit to being left with a few unanswered questions, but this is only the first book of many in this series. I am sure all will come together for me in the following books. I look forward to diving into the next one.

If you are a fan of Fantasy, Adventure, endearing male protagonists and loving fatherly/son relationships? Then go pick up the Ranger's Apprentice series.

My review:

I have had this one on my TBR list for awhile now and I have read some good reviews. But I really had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised! I really, really enjoyed this one! The world that Ann Aguirre has created is everything that this genre should be, but without being cheesy and predictable. The first half of the book takes place in the underground
tunnels where we meet the inhabitants of the College Enclave. I found the everyday living and governing of the enclave to be fascinating. Along with the other inhabitants of the tunnels, the Freaks. I guess some would call them the 'zombies' of this story, but I liked that they were more of the mutant species. Ann Aguirre did a great job of creating a picture of these grotesque, scary, bone chilling creatures! I loved them!

The main character and voice of the story, Deuce, is such a great character. She is a strong, kick-ass, yet believable girl...which I love! She has dreamed of becoming a Huntress and has watched the other Hunters with admiration her whole life. It is what she was meant to do, and she is good at it. Once she is branded as a Huntress she is teamed up with Fade. He is the outcast of the enclave. Yes, he has proven that he is one of the best of the Hunters, but he is an outsider and not considered one of them. Fade is a very strong, sexy, yet understated character. I loved the dynamics between these two. As a fighting duo they are tops. But I also loved the understated chemistry between them. There was none of the unrealistic 'love at first sight' or love triangle nonsense involved here. As a reader you are definitely rooting for these two and become very invested in their lives.

The other secondary characters in this book are all well developed as well. Some of them may not play Hugh roles, but they most definitely make their own impacts on the story as a whole. I really loved the Burrowers and Jengu. I would have loved more of them and who knows maybe they survived and they will make an appearance in the next book.

The second half of the book takes place after Deuce and Fade are banished Topside. I enjoyed this other dimension to the story and the addition of some new characters. Not only do they have the Freaks to contend with but the gangs of 'wolves' were added to the mix. During this conflict we are introduced two other important characters in the story, Tegan and Stalker. Tegan provides a kinda of sisterhood for Deuce, which she is in need of considering how alone they all are. Although, Stalker starts off as the strong villain? I really do like him and look forward to seeing where Ann Aguirre takes this character in the next book.

If you are a fan of YA Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian or just looking for something different? I highly recommend this book. I am eagerly awaiting book 2...Outpost...due out September of 2012!

My Review:

What are my first thoughts on this final installment of The Forest of Hands and Teeth Trilogy? I adored it! This was by far my favorite of the three. Not only is the story well developed but these characters? Incredible!

Move over Jace and Clary! Annah and Catcher are amazing. These two have become one of my favorite YA couples. Not only are they great together, but on their own they are strong, sensitive, loving and believable! I was brought to tears many times during this story. Carrie Ryan has a gift for delving into the human soul and getting to the core of her characters. As a reader you truly get the sense of how much inner turmoil these two struggle with. Catcher is on the brink between the living and the dead. We feel his loneliness as a result of being an Immune. We truly get a glimpse at his inner rage and fear of becoming a monster and turning those he loves into the unconsecrated. On the other side we see Annah's loneliness and the inner hatred and shame as a result of her scars.

This book is also filled with those great characters that we love to hate. Ox, Conall and all the Recruiters on the Island are true, true evil. Some of the things that take place are bone chilling and heartbreaking.

However, aside from all the death and destruction? A message of love and hope. Carrie Ryan has earned a spot at the top of my favorite author list. I can not wait to devour everything she writes in the future. My only complaint? I ache for more of Annah and Catcher!

You could read this as a stand alone, however, you would be missing out. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and this series!

My review:

I have to say, I loved this second installment of the Maze Runner Trilogy! It is such a refreshing change from all the Paranormal and Dystopian Romance out there right now in the YA genre. I think this really has something for everyone. I love the fact that the main character is a strong male as well. There really is not a lot of books out there for boys and this one is definitely something teen boys could sink their teeth into.

James Dashner has an amazing, amazing creative mind. Where does he come up with this stuff? Truly mind bending. I found myself constantly having to reminding myself that these are kids. They are constantly being lured into a false sense of security in knowing that these horrific things are finally at an end, only to be thrown back into an even more horrific nightmare. Again and again. James Dashner has such an amazing ability to immerse you into this unbelievable world, yet make it completely and utterly believable. There is so much mystery surrounding these characters and why they are being put through these horrific trials. There are constantly more questions being raised with every turn of the page. Yet the pace and development of story and characters is so totally enthralling you never feel as though you are going to drown in the mystery.

All of these characters are amazing in their own right. Thomas is still very much a strong and believable character in this second book. We definitely see him grow throughout this book, but he still stays very true to who he was in The Maze Runner. All the returning characters like, Minho, Newt and Teresa are great, but the addition of Brenda and Jorge added another dimension to the story that was needed. Just that little something to keep the story development and character development moving. Something that sometimes is severely lacking with a middle book in a Trilogy. I also loved the addition of the Crank. I am starting to become a fan of a little Zombie action here and there.

There are so many twists and turns in this book, that you never have to worry about anything becoming predictable or boring. Okay, yes. I guess the ending in a way is predictable. We know that nothing is going to be resolved as there is another book. I am just glad that I don't have to wait a whole year for The Death Cure!

Yes, this is a YA Sci-fi, but it truly is a book...and series...that will be enjoyed by YA and Adults alike. I highly recommend this book and this series.

My review:

I was browsing through the free ebooks available at the Sony Reader Store and came across this one. It sounded like something I might enjoy and it had a fairly high Goodreads rating on it, so why not. I had no idea what I was in store for. I did not realize this was an 'Adult' fantasy, but thought why not give it a read.

A few things first that I did not enjoy about this book. The editing, or lack of was a Hugh distraction at times for me. I am no literary scholar, but seriously this one had a ton of grammatical errors and typing errors that really bothered me. The overall story line was interesting, but I just found many times in the beginning the story line was rushed just to get to the 'nasty' stuff. And the ending? Very rushed and a real disappointment. This world that Autumn Dawn has created is interesting, but there are many aspects that need further explanation and development to fully understand this world. I would have enjoyed it more had there been more story development with in their world.

What I did love about this book though. The two main characters Jasmine and Keilor. Yes, their chemistry was...well hot and steamy, but I just loved these two. Their relationship and their overall being were just characters that I totally got. Jasmine is this headstrong, no holds bar, sarcastic and funny kinda girl. Keilor? Strong, sexy, sarcastic and funny in his own right. But also very loving and caring. These two are definitely what saved this book in my opinion. Apparently there are more books in this series, but they do not include Jasmine and Keilor, so I think I will pass.

If you are fan of hot and steamy adult fantasy/sci-fi then you might enjoy this one. As I said it is worth it just to get to know Jasmine and Keilor.
